Song of the Day: Iggy Pop featuring Kate Pierson - Candy (1990)

I usually hate it when major rock figures go for a late-career pop hit single, but I guess this is one of those exceptions that proves the rule. By 1990 Iggy Pop had been one of the godfathers of punk for two decades, and he finally went for a run at the top 40. But this is a great song about longing and undead passion, with Pop's best singing and a fantastic guest appearance by Kate Pierson of the B 52's.

Iggy and Kate were major figures of the post-punk movement in the late 70's and early 80's, so they're a good match for a song about looking back. Iggy Pop in a music video with (relatively) short hair and strumming an acoustic guitar might sound like a horrible idea, but it really works. And hey, even when you send him to the pop charts, no one tells James Osterberg to put a shirt on.
